Our experience tips for your hiking holiday with children in South Tyrol

Ratschings Mountain Adventure World – easy

In the Ratschings Mountain Adventure World, an adventure hiking trail at 1,800 metres above sea level and within walking distance of Alpura, children can marvel and play to their heart’s content. The roughly 45-minute circular hike, suitable for pushchairs, begins at the mountain station for the Ratschings-Jaufen cable car and delights young and old alike with its many attractions.

First, it’s crawling and giggling through the marmot tunnels, then back into the sunlight and on to the children’s Alpine farm with a petting zoo, where shaggy goats sniff at curious little hands. The mesmerising world of marble leaves everyone speechless. How beautiful can stone be? How can stone shine like that? Little ones climb on the giant ant like true mountaineers, while in the mysterious moorland world, rare plants and animals share their stories.

Then comes the music: in the SoundWorld, wild melodies emerge from rustic wooden instruments. Imaginative tree sculptures transform the path into a fairytale realm, before everyone breathlessly scrambles up the squirrel tower. “Can you see Alpura down there between the trees?” calls Mum, and bright eyes peer down at their home-from-home. Like eagles, they soar safely through the air before stepping barefoot and hand in hand through the cool KneippWorld. Water games turn into splash battles, the adventure forest becomes an area of discovery.

The giant wooden marble run enthrals everyone at the end. Then it’s time to head back. With tired legs, happy faces, and plenty of diary-worthy memories.

Barefoot trail – easy

The barefoot trail in Inner Ratschings is a 400-metre-long Kneipp path where you walk barefoot over different materials such as sand, wood, and grass. It’s an experience that lets you sense nature in a truly special way.

Themed trail in the Pfeifer Huisele gorge – easy

Once upon a time, there was a sorcerer named Pfeifer Huisele who haunted the forests of Ratschings. So says the story that leads you straight from Alpura into the magically beautiful mountain world of Ratschings. Follow his mysterious footsteps along the valley path to its end, where the mystical Pfeifer Huisele gorge opens like an ancient gate.

Here, between moss-covered rocks and roaring waterfalls, informative stations tell of the sorcerer’s life and the secrets of the region’s flora and fauna. Eventually, you reach the Butsee Alpine Lake, where you’ll discover Pfeifer Huisele’s footprint set on a stone.

Forest and Water Nature Trail near Wolfsthurn Castle – easy

The educational trail leading to Wolfsthurn Castle is the perfect destination for a family hike in South Tyrol. It offers fascinating insights into the Alpine plant and animal world and pairs perfectly with a castle visit.

Seven-Lake Hike – challenging

The mountain tour for experienced hikers in the rear Ridnaun Valley leads to seven impressive mountain lakes and ranks among the Stubai Alps’ hiking highlights.

Becherhaus – challenging

At 3,195 metres above sea level, the Becherhaus is South Tyrol’s highest mountain refuge and the ideal destination for a demanding mountain tour in the Stubai Alps, providing panoramic views.
