Here, you’ll experience the roar of the water and the pristine panorama with all your senses.

Every year at the end of September, cows, calves, sheep and lambs return from the mountain pastures to the valley. The event is traditionally celebrated with a full programme: as the animals arrive in the valley adorned in festive decorations, visitors enjoy lively music and sample delicious South Tyrolean specialities. The largest and most festive Almabtrieb takes place in Maiern/Ridnaun.

Wolfsthurn Castle near Mareit, above Sterzing, is a baroque architectural gem. Historians once called it “the most beautiful castle in Tyrol”. Today, its original state rooms house the South Tyrolean Museum of Hunting and Fishing. You reach the castle via the “Forest and Water” themed trail, which shares knowledge about Alpine life at interactive stations.

Aglsbodenalm lies in an idyllic location within a secluded mountain basin above the Ridnaun Valley. Surrounded by steep slopes, it’s accessible on foot via the spectacular Burghardklamm Gorge. While resting at the serviced alpine hut at 1,720 metres above sea level, you’ll bask in sweeping panoramic views of the magnificent mountains. And if you fancy, you can cast a fishing line into the clear mountain lake beside the hut. The trout that take the bait are freshly prepared for you in the hut afterwards.

Sterzing, once closely tied to the Fugger merchant-banking dynasty, is a medieval city in the Wipptal valley, crossed by the Eisack river. Its well-preserved old town, with historic city gates, narrow alleyways, and the famous Zwölferturm gate tower, is especially worth seeing. Sterzing is a proud member of the “Borghi più belli d’Italia” (most beautiful small historic towns) association and ranks among South Tyrol’s most beautiful towns.

The 46-metre-high Zwölferturm gate tower rises impressively at the edge of Sterzing’s old town. This late Gothic city tower (1468–1472) once stood above the uppermost city gate and was built to protect the town from danger. As a symbol of the region’s economic boom during the Fugger dynasty era, it remains a popular photo spot and the landmark of Sterzing to this day.

The 1.3-km rail-guided toboggan run on Sterzing’s local mountain, the Rosskopf, promises action for all ages. It starts at the mountain station (2,120 metres above seal level) for the panoramic lift and whisks you down into the valley at speeds of up to 40km/h – with views of the Eisack valley to enjoy on the way. Thanks to its steep section with an average gradient of 21%, fast-paced summer fun is guaranteed for young and old alike.

The Skytrek high ropes course is located at the northern entrance to Sterzing, just a few minutes from the town centre. Set in a large forested area, it features several routes with suspension bridges, nets, ropes, and long ziplines. Towering above the village of Freienfeld near Sterzing is the well-preserved Reifenstein Castle. This medieval hilltop castle has fortunately never been destroyed and today offers tours of the keep, the great hall, the “Green Room”, and even a torture chamber. It is one of the best-preserved castles in Tyrol and offers insights into the lives of knights and castle dwellers from bygone times.

Nestled in the Ridnaun Valley near Maiern, the South Tyrol Mining Museum can be found at Schneeberg. It showcases original preserved machinery, tunnels, and tools from the region’s mining era.
